The Blue Lagoon, Grindavík

Overview

Imagine relaxing in a blend of seawater and geothermally heated water, rich in silica, minerals, and algae, all while surrounded by a lunar lava landscape. This experience is one of Iceland's most famous and a huge tourist draw. But although it attracts the masses, as soak in the Blue Lagoon is good for your skin and a real treat for the mind, body, and soul!

To make the experience even more unique, take a dip under the artificial waterfall. This exhilarating shower is a fabulous way to ease sore muscles. You can also use the iconic white silica mud for a detoxifying body and face mask while you relax.

The Blue Lagoon has the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant to thank for its development. In 1976, an employee named Valur Margeirsson asked if he could swim in the pool created by Svartsengi's operations. He had psoriasis and didn't want to swim in a public pool. Bathing in the soothing water healed his skin, and when other people living with psoriasis tried it, their psoriasis also improved greatly. The Blue Lagoon Clinic is now an internationally recognized psoriasis treatment facility!

We landed at KEF at 0630 and were in the Blue Lagoon by 0845. It was a great wake up and re-invigoration after our 5 hour redeye from BWI. Crowds were not bad and you could find some quieter spots beyond the main lagoon to enjoy the experience. The premium experience was nice with the different mud treatments and the robe for lounge outside the water.

Tips for future travelers

For first timers to Iceland, recommend doing both Blue and Sky Lagoon if you can. Both warm soothing lagoons but the experiences are different. For a return trip to Iceland, would probably choose the Sky Lagoon.

This was great to do after the day of travel. Not a rough or far drive from the airport and a very nice introduction to Iceland. I will tell you this....it does make you sleepy. We struggled to get much done after this besides getting to the hotel. We did the red eye in and didnt get a chance to sleep much so I am sure that didnt help things. Read more

The Blue Lagoon Premium Admission was an incredible way to start our trip. Initially, I was hesitant about visiting right after our flight, but it turned out to be rejuvenating and the perfect way to unwind. We didn't want to leave! The warm waters were soothing after the long journey, and I'm really glad this was included as part of our itinerary at the start.
