What you'll do

You'll meet your guide and fellow travelers in the Fairy Springs suburb, just northwest of central Rotorua. There's a quick briefing, then take a 15-minute bus ride to a slice of ancient New Zealand: the Dansey Road Scenic Reserve (also known as Okoheriki). Step into your harness and secure your helmet, then head into the wilderness with two seasoned guides. They'll introduce you to the now-vibrant landscape, answering any lingering questions while fastening you into the belay system.

And then you're off. Soar through the forest, whizzing past tree ferns and tawa evergreens. You'll soon reach the 1,000-year-old rimu tree, rich in stories (your guides will tell the best ones). As you walk along the "silver fern bridge," spot New Zealand's national plant and its unmistakable white undersides in every direction. From there, experience a series of three more exhilarating ziplines, each gradually increasing in length until you take on a 720-foot (220 m) thrill.

Return to the forest floor for an easy trail walk while you discover current conservation efforts: years of hard work have brightened the ecosystem, and future plans aim to bring back even more native flora and fauna. You'll see some up close during a bird feeding (volunteer to hold their food or simply watch), led by expert commentary. Whether you encounter a toutouwai (North Island robin), miromiro (tomtit), or another friendly species, you'll get insight into why they've chosen this land to call home.

But the adventure isn't over yet. You'll climb back into the canopy for two final ziplines and the "no hands bridge," a short stretch where you'll rely on your balance (and of course, your harness) to make it across. Let the adrenaline fade as you walk back to the starting point, return your gear, and relax on the quick drive back to Rotorua. Digital copies of the day's photos, taken by your guides, will be sent to you after your experience.
