Noga helped us plan a long awaited trip to Iceland. She worked with our original idea of "how hard can it be to drive around Iceland in a week" to a much more realistic and enjoyable experience. We were able to visit the Snaefellsness Peninsula, Golden Circle and southern area of Iceland, which gave us a best of Iceland experience!
Our hotels were comfortable and close to the activities we had planned. The food was delicious with each accommodation having a restaurant on-site!
After arriving in Reykjavik early in the morning and taking a stroll around the Hallgrimskirkja church and having a bite to eat at the Cafe Loki (highly recommend!), we drove a couple hours north to the Hvammsvik Hot Springs. This was one of the best experiences that Noga arranged for us. It's smaller with several small pools set in the rocks leading down to the bay, where you could take a cold plunge! They also had a sauna one could enjoy. The setting was intimate, and the cafe attached to the hot springs served delicious food and drinks. Of note, we also experienced the Blue Lagoon on our last day in Iceland, and hands down, the Hvammsvik Hot Springs far outweighs that over crowded tourist blight.
Another fun thing Noga arranged for us to do was the Thorsmork Super Jeep Experience! Simeon was our guide/driver and we couldn't have had a better time. We were in a group of 7 which was perfect for this adventure. Simeon was informative with a dry sense of humor, which we all appreciated! The landscape was outstanding. We stopped at different sites, including a glacier that we could walk up to (gulp!).
Having a car allowed us the freedom to change our plans on the fly when our planned Glacier Lagoon by Zodiac Boat tour was canceled due to high winds. We were still able to enjoy seeing the floating ice in the lagoon, but decided to continue down the coastline to the small town of Hofn! We had a lovely lunch and explored the area before driving back to our hotel at Nupar.
All-in-all, we had a trip of a life-time in Iceland and we couldn't express our thanks to Noga and KimKim any deeper for arranging this for us!
Hotel Reviews
Our room at the Fosshotel Stykkisholmur was on the larger size, situated on the corner of the building overlooking both the town and water! We had a small refrigerator and separate chairs and table at which to sit.
We spent two nights at the Hotel Vos, which is a small family run hotel located in the countryside near Þykkvibær, South Iceland. Because it's smaller, there is no formal check-in/out process - you do that online once you arrive. You're given a code for your room door and make your way to your room, which is easy to do since it's all on one floor. Parking is free right outside the hotel. The hotel is situated a short distance off the road, so the rooms were nice and quiet! The breakfast was good with fruit, pastry, breads, sliced meats and cheese, etc. We ate our dinner here both nights as the food was delicious! We used the Hotel Vos as a jumping off point to explore Hella and do the Thórsmörk Super Jeep Experience (a must do experience!).
Our room was nice but rather spartan. One nice thing was the small semi-private patio you could walk out on to view the surrounding landscape right from your room! The restaurant food was quite good, which was nice as there really aren't any other restaurants nearby. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean.
The Hotel Muli actually turned out to be a bit better than expected. The room was clean and bed comfortable. It was a bit funky in that the elevator had doors on both ends so you had to exit on the right side to get to your room. Parking was on the street, which we felt lucky to get a spot. There are several very good restaurants within walking distance.
Activity Reviews
Since this was on the way to other sights, we made a quick stop to view the small series of waterfalls a short distance from the parking lot.
We loved our experience on the Thórsmörk Super Jeep Experience! We were fortunate to have a small group (7 of us), where other groups had 10-15. Our driver, Simeon, had a dry sense of humor which fit our style perfectly! Once we were fully off-road, Simeon made several stops to view out of the way waterfalls and a glacier you could walk up to! We stopped for a delicious lunch at a remote cabin used by the "forest service" types. There was a short hike one could do or you could just relax on the couches and admire the view! Simeon did a great job explaining how earlier settlers used to travel the same path we took, as you couldn't call most of the trip a road. We did several river crossings and appreciated his expertise in navigating the terrain. He made it look so easy (it wasn't!).
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Hvammsvik Hot Springs. The location was on the way from Reykjavík to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We arrived that morning and did a quick walk around Reykjavik and then drove to the hot springs, about an hour away. The location is perfect. You don't think it's going to be that special until you get closer to the actual building and hot springs. The small cafe attached to the hot springs has delicious drinks and food. When you're ready to enter the hot springs, you're given a towel and water shoes. There are lockers for your clothes and showers. There are several small hot springs you can use ,depending on how hot you want your water to be. The different pools lead up to the Whale Fjord, where you can do a cold plunge. They also have a sauna for your use.
Thank you so much, Judy! I loved working with you and am so glad you had an amazing time in beautiful Iceland. Hvammsvík Hot Springs may be my very favorite lagoon in Iceland, so I'm happy to hear you agree 😊 I hope you'll decide to visit again one day and I'll look forward to working together then!
